About Us

Cultivating Excellence Across the State –

The Professional Garden Judges came together back in the mid 1990’s when a small group of passionate garden professionals realised there was an absence of trained people who could provide assistance to the swelling Event Calendars of Councils in New South Wales Local Government Areas

Prior to this, the Sydney Morning Herald ran a much-celebrated annual garden competition, which ran effectively for many decades. It faded briefly in the 70’s to be relaunched soon after by The Manly Daily newspaper.

Its immediate success spurred their council and others to take over and start their own competitions. Before long Event Managers had realised their potential as a comparatively inexpensive tool to foster community engagement.

Some organizations were keen to exclude any possibility of bias that can arise using internal or local club judges, & were looking for an alternative.

Our group provided a small flexible team developed from earlier ventures that brought with them a wealth of experience in areas as diverse as landscape gardening and education, horticultural history, production design, land care, nursery management and marketing.

Honorary Members maintain connection to the team, offering significant reference points to the evolving garden events sector. Together, our collective exposure to literally thousands of amateur and professional gardens of all styles and eras throughout the world provides an invaluable knowledge base for our Judges.
